A man wounded by gunfire at a migrant camp in northern France has died, bringing the death toll from a series of shootings at the weekend to three, officials said Thursday.

Northern France has seen an eruption of makeshift camps in recent years set up by migrants hoping to reach Britain by making the perilous crossing across the Channel.

The man had been badly wounded in a shooting Sunday in a migrant camp at Loon-Plage, outside the city of Dunkirk, which also killed another person.

Dunkirk prosecutor Charlotte Huet reported the second death, without giving details on the victim's identity.

A police source said he had been shot in the temple, adding another victim wounded in the legs had fled.

Sunday's shooting came a day after a similar incident near another migrant camp in the area in which a 24-year-old Sudanese man was killed and five people were wounded.

Authorities arrested a 29-year-old Iraqi and a 16-year-old Afghan national after that shooting.

More than 1,500 asylum seekers are currently estimated to be on the northern French coast.

So far this year, at least 15 migrants have died at sea trying to reach England, French authorities say.

Last year, 78 migrants died trying to make the crossing aboard small boats, a record since the start of the trend in 2018.
